Wissing: “I always wanted to do something with wood, that was crystal clear” 💪

There are many small joineries in and around the Münsterland district of Borken. Tom Wissing, now a master carpenter and head of CAD at Terhalle Holzbau GmbH, quickly realized that he wanted to work with wood. At the same time, the question arose as to where he might have the opportunity to “see something more or do something bigger” and Terhalle was “already a name here”. 🏡🏗️

The master craftsman, who gets to know the entire range of tasks from roof trusses to timber construction engineering during his training at the group of companies, actually proceeds step by step. “I introduced myself as a trainee and spent a lot of time on site helping to erect the timber constructions. Even back then, everyone in timber construction met you at eye level, which was great fun,” Tom remembers to this day.

In 2016, he began his training and traveled all over Germany with the Terhalle teams on construction sites. After two instructive years as a journeyman carpenter, the current CAD division manager decided in 2021 to tackle the master craftsman training course part-time – on Fridays and Saturdays – with great commitment. 📖

“Even before that,” says Tom Wissing, “I had already found my place in the CAD office as a design engineer.” Here, too, his colleagues involved him in the processes early on, including the creation of property-specific structural analysis and a fire protection concept. “You start with the first smaller objects such as a garage or a carport and then work your way up to larger construction projects via the detached house.”

Since last year, Tom Wissing has been able to call himself a master carpenter – another milestone on his career path, which has been characterized by his enthusiasm for wood from the very beginning. Today, he is passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation and has put his personal stamp on numerous projects over the years, always in close collaboration with colleagues. 🪵📏
